The Beginning of the Summer of Love

In the summer of 1967 people from all over the country gathered together to celebrate peace and hippy ideas. June 21 was the first day of the summer and set the stage for the upcoming "Summer of Love".

To begin the Summer of Love, people sang together and joined with each other to create a loving and calm environment. It took place in San Francisco, California in the Haight-Ashbury district. The Human Be-In Rally is thought to have started the idea for the Summer of Love. 100,000 people are thought to have arrived in San Francisco that summer to take part in the festivities. The name for the Summer of Love was brought up by the council of the town and it was meant to put a positive spin on the druggy, hairy hippy gatherings that were portrayed negatively by the media.

The reason why June 21, 1967 is an important date from the event is because it was the first day of a memorable experience for thousands of people. Young students wanted to travel, do drugs, grow their hair, and live cheaply. This area and event had all of that and many more to enjoy.
