The Human Be-In Rally

The Human Be-In Rally happened on January 14, 1967. Tens of thousands of people gathered together in Golden Gate Park, CA, in the Haight-Ashbury district, to celebrate and discuss key ideas of the 1960's counterculture movement. Some of those ideas being communal living, environmental awareness, personal empowerment, and radical liberal political consciousness.

Throughout the day attendees could listen to leaders of the movement speak including Timothy Leary, Allen Ginsberg, and Gary Snyder. The best music acts from the Haights area also played. Some of those bands were the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Jefferson Airplane.

The reason the Human Be-In Rally was so important is because it set the standard for all future counterculture celebrations. The rally also set the stage for the Summer of Love. After the event, Haight-Ashbury district became the center for the hippie movement.
