The Last Day of Woodstock

August 18, 1969 marks the last unofficial day of the music festival Woodstock. Originally meant to be only a three day experience, the festivities went on for an extra day. Close to half a million people, often called hippies, took in the musical performances by artists like Janis Joplin, The Who, Creedence Clear Water Revival, and many more. The young fans also experimented with all sorts of drugs while enjoying the legendary acts.

The reason why the last day of Woodstock is so important is because of the most memorable moment for many people. This moment was when Jimi Hendrix played gave a rambling, rocking solo guitar performance of "The Star Spangled Banner".  This moment became on of the symbols for the Counterculture Movement. Fans describe it as surreal and moving.

A popular topic at the event was the Vietnam War. Many people attending Woodstock were against the war and actively protested it. People joining together to hear a modern take on the national anthem was a perfect way to end the festivities of Woodstock.
